AI-generated papers published by scientists seem to have become a real problem for scientific journals and have influence on the scientific community.
A new report from 404 Media highlights at least several cases in which scientific journals have published articles that appear to have been generated using artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT.
According to the investigation, new articles generated using artificial intelligence were published in academic journals. Following the release of the results, questions were raised in the scientific community about the impact of artificial intelligence-based tools on academia as a whole. The report links to Google Scholar’s journal database, which notes that searches for artificial intelligence-specific phrases such as “As of the last time I updated my knowledge” and “I do not have access to real-time data” turned up over 100 scientific articles.
It is unclear whether these documents were entirely created by artificial intelligence or whether the new technology was used only in certain sections of the article. However, 404 Media reports that at least one paper has been submitted to the respected chemistry journal Surfaces and Interfaces. The article was then peer-reviewed and published, without even removing the introduction from the AI chatbot.
The article contains in the introduction the phrase “Sure, here’s a possible introduction for your topic” – a common response from an AI-driven tool. And further text, which no one seems to have checked for accuracy: “The three-dimensional porous mesh structure of the copper-organic framework with an aramid cellulose membrane enhances the electrochemical performance of the lithium metal anode.”
At the moment, this is only circumstantial evidence, and there is no direct evidence that scientists used artificial intelligence to write their entire articles. However, some cases of artificial intelligence involvement seem to have occurred, which raises a reasonable question: “To what extent is it acceptable to use AI tools in the preparation of scientific papers?”
